A Vintage update from our Senior Winemaker

This has been one of the most challenging growing seasons the Riverland has ever experienced. The season began with multiple extreme weather events which included record spring rain and the highest flood levels since 1956.

Vintage was delayed by 3 to 4 weeks, creating conditions that favoured our white grape varieties; Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Gris, exhibiting fresh acidity and bright flavours.

With an emphasis on Sauvignon Blanc, we saw a season that favoured the production of delicate tropical aromas of Sauvignon Blanc while retaining generous amounts of natural acidity. While we have only just finished blending our 2023 wine, I am already excited to see how this season has played out in the flavours of the finished wine.

Expect to see a wine with slightly less green herbaceous flavours and more guava, passionfruit and pineapple while maintaining crunchy acidity. An outstanding feature of this vintage is the depth of fruit flavour that the vines developed while maintaining a naturally low alcohol level.

Overall the vintage will be remembered for its many challenges for growers and winemakers, but the wines should be ones that can be savoured and enjoyed with confidence.
