The Details

Tasting Note Initial blue fruits, cola and rhubarb aromas are joined by hints of rose petal, peppercorn and baked blueberry pie. The fine, fresh, red fruits palate is imbued with hints of jasmine, darker cherries and gingerbread on the long, finish of this deliciously complex wine.
Best Enjoyed With Slow-cooked duck breast with sweet and sour blackcurrant jus, served with celeriac purée and roast baby beets; or pad Thai with basil and roasted peanuts.
Treatment The fruit was handpicked, 12% of the bunches were placed directly into the fermenter with the balance being destemmed and placed on top for fermentation. Natural fermentation commenced after four days and the must was plunged up to three times daily. The wine was pressed and placed into French oak barriques (30% new) for 10 months. Malolactic fermentation occurred in spring and the wine was blended in February prior to bottling.

Lovely
There is a lovely meaty edge to this year's Coal River Valley release. The fruits lie in the blueberry and red cherry spectrum with plenty of underlying exotic spice, poached rhubarb, pomegranate, amaro herbs, citrus blossom and a whiff of game. But it's that meaty, umami stuff on the palate that grabs you, swelling at first, some sour cherry sweeping in, tannins silty fine and a lacy mineral acid presence provides the pulse. Lovely.

Attractive and complex
Medium-light red with a tint of purple in the rim; the bouquet spicy and shows some oak, and also possibly whole-bunch dry-stalk character. The wine is lean and savoury, with a firm and drying tannin grip on a lighter framed structure, the finish quite firm in grip with a twist of bitterness. A fraction dry-red-ish, but still attractive and complex.

This is deep, dark and sexy
Restrained and reticent straight off with a deep, brooding aromatic profile. Clove, nutmeg, damp earth, and au jus make way for sweet pops of plum pudding and a glimmer of mocha. This is deep, dark and sexy with savouriness leading the charge. The earth notes emerge more with air along with decaying leaves. The melding of earthiness and sweet spice is very appealing as it encircles the core of fruit. The palate has similar restraint and dark, ferrous appeal. Ripe plum, clove, earth, and forest floor glide through the mouth before a vigorous line of sour earth-laden acidity holds sway. The tannins are chalky though svelte and supple. Good length here, defined by forest floor and brown spice. A complex, intense, and enchanting Pinot Noir.
