The Details

Tasting Note Green and vibrant in appearance. Zesty lemon and grapefruit aromas with a hint of dried green herb, overlaid with subtle toast and spice from extended time in bottle. The palate is lively and generous with lemon meringue, stewed Royal Gala apple flavours, hints of minerality, sage oil and sea spray, finishing with refreshing acidity.
Best Enjoyed With Perfect with some natural oysters, or a fresh rocket and pomegranate salad.
Treatment Clare Valley’s Jeffrey Grosset and Eden Valley’s Robert Hill-Smith work together each vintage before taking their chosen grapes – Jeffrey’s in the blue buckets and Robert’s in the yellow - and parting ways to crush and ferment the fruit at different locations. Debate follows, as the juice is assessed and the final, final, final blend is agreed upon. Each component, nearly identical at the start, undergoes a different conversion into wine, reflecting the personal differences of both men.

Accolades

Stunning length of flavour
It seems to happen less often these days, but I salute the producers that hold back wines for these 'classic releases', thereby giving wine lovers a chance to enjoy well-cellared wines coming into their drinking sweet spot. We wine hacks constantly harp on about riesling being undervalued, but when you try a wine like this you'll get it. Lime, green apple and grapefruit with underlying soft spice, wildflowers, stone and dried hay. Calm yet still with mineral focus, clarity and velocity, stunning length of flavour and toasty, limey complexity. Very nice indeed.
